Lotus Motorcycle unveils the C-01: Buy Just for $130,000 (Photo)
After Ducati revealed to us a fireball at $130,000, it was the turn of Lotus back in the race for two luxury wheels. C01 is a concentrate of technology and finesse for a pretty hefty price tag that falls within its rarity.
The designer Daniel Simon Head on the draft C01 is also known for having worked on many well-known projects such as the Bugatti Veyron but the motorcycle from Tron: Legacy or oblivion, captain america etc.
Produced only 100 copies, the C01 is already asleep and collector. It is powered by a V-Twin engine inclined at 75 degrees providing 200 horsepower. The two wheels is composed of lightweight materials such as aluminum or carbon fiber, which ultimately constitutes a weight of only 181 pounds dry. Little motorized vehicle have a power to weight ratio of less than one.
"We created a bike that is not just made to run but showing a work of art in motion," said Colin Kolles team principal Kodewa.
Trying to balance style, functionality, and engineering was the biggest challenge for the Simon and the builders. The design brief called for an ultra low profile and a “visual lightness” that would obfuscate the C-01′s considerable size.
“Right from the start the proportion and layout was supervised by an experienced motorcycle racing engineer from Kodewa, ensuring that each design step would stay within the high performance and handling goals,” says Simon. In some cases they were able to reach an agreement. In others, style obviously superseded substance.
“Another challenge was to maintain the low profile requested, so the fuel tank moved under the seat, eliminating space for a mono-shock layout and resulting in a retro-cool twin-shock,” says Simon. Retro-cool. Yes. Modern? Not quite. Twin shocks have been out of favor on any bike with sporting intentions for the better part of three decades.
